ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) on Monday condemned the brutal act of terrorism in Quetta whereby lawyers and bar leaders were massacred and announced a one week mourning and three-day complete strike in all courts of the country.
PBC Vice Chairman Farogh Naseem and PBC Executive Committee Chairman Abdul Fayyaz in a joint statement said the shameful act martyred more than 70 lawyers.
They said as a mark of respect to the martyred and injured lawyers the PBC announced one-week mourning and as a matter of protest announced a complete strike for three days in all the courts in the country, including the Supreme Court.
They requested the Chief Justice of Pakistan to not hold the Supreme Court for three days and in this respect all lawyers (especially all Advocates of the Supreme Court) were requested to voluntarily boycott all the court proceedings as the incident was a direct attack on the lawyer community.
They called on the government and the law enforcement agencies to take appropriate steps so as to protect the life and liberty of the citizens, in particular the lawyers.
They also called upon the federal and Balochistan governments to initially give compensation of Rs 2 million per martyred lawyer and Rs 1 million per injured lawyer to the affected families.
In the second stage, Rs 5 million per martyred lawyer and Rs 2.5 million per injured lawyer should be paid by the government to the PBC, which would facilitate such disbursement, they said.
